Dynamite Areolas

Today was a busy day. We did the tourist thing until about 11 or 12, then drove 9 1/2 hours. We're a little whooped. We're at a hotel room in Missoula, MT [a Days Inn, which btw, is really seedy. That's what I get for booking the cheapest room on hotels.com] Anyway - here are some pictures from today.

we started off the day visiting Mt. Rushmore [which has totally capitalized on the whole 'National Treasure' thing. all the billboards say it. even souvenir glasses. odd.]

apparently George, Tom, Ted & Abe enjoy a cool, refreshing coca-cola

the aisle of state flags was pretty cool - the gust of wind didn't hurt, either :)

one of the few photos of me [I'm ok with that]

[no caption needed]

this is a plaster model of the Crazyhorse monument. Brandon mentioned that he has dynamite areolas - a Scrubs reference [if you know Brandon you're not surprised]. ya know, since they use dynamite to carve the giant sculpture ;)

it's truly gigantic - much larger than Mt. Rushmore

We visited Bedrock! It's a 'Theme Park' [playground, really] that is really brightly colored and made of concrete. It was kinda lame, but really awesome at the same time.

Here's the Rubbles' house. I drove his car [or I at least acted to]

oh, kitsch. how I love thee.

the horizon is getting increasingly more interesting! the mountains are very pretty - I can't wait to get into the Rockies tomorrow. We'll be getting to Seattle tomorrow, so check back!

Day 1!

We're well on our way to Seattle! We left this morning at about 7 from Columbia, MO, and we are currently in Rapid City, SD. It's been a long day, but we've had a lot of fun!
Missouri and Iowa are pretty dull, be we started seeing cool stuff in South Dakota:

just a funny name in a small southeast s. dakota town. I like the name.

this is somewhere in the middle of SD - I'm not sure why a giant hammer is near a big cow head, but it's interesting. if you look closely, little skeleton natives are shooting arrows at the giant cow. I'll bet they're not hindi.

after seeing tons of signs, we decided to stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. The whole town defines itself by the Corn Palace. apparently the first one was built in 1892. we also got some popcorn here - they had a lot of it.

the facade of the building is covered in corn cobs. I wonder what they do during a really strong storm? or a wicked heat wave?

shortly after the corn palace, a kamikaze bird hit our windshield. we felt bad for it, but it's gonna suck to try to get it off of the windshield [we didn't want to smear it with the wipers, so we stared at it for a long time] If you look closely, you can see feathers.

again, I'm not sure why a skeleton native has a t-rex on a leash, but I really like it.

the 6-ton Prairie Dog! This was our last stop before our destination, and it was worth it. The color is right - mustard yellow, and a weird pinkish-peach. I love it.

prairie dog butt.

So - tomorrow morning we're catching Mt. Rushmore, Crazyhorse, and Little Big Horn. Stay tuned!
